Hacks to maximise your indoor cooling systems in Singapore

Ok, for those of you who came here because of this polar bear or those cute little penguins, that was a clickbait, but the ceiling fan and air con thingy is for real!

 

Living in Singapore means dealing with hot and humid weather all year round. To stay comfortable indoors without breaking the bank on electricity bills, it's essential to maximise your air conditioning efficiency.

Here are some tips to help you achieve just that.

But first, make sure you already have the following: a place you call home (BTO, Condo, landed or simply just a room), best complete with windows, curtains & doors, a ceiling fan & an air conditioner.

 

Utilise Curtains/blinds Effectively

One simple yet effective way to keep your indoor space cool is by using curtains & blinds strategically. During the hottest parts of the day, keep your them closed to block out the sun's heat. This will help reduce the workload on your air conditioning unit and keep your space cooler without using excess energy.  

Invest in a motorised curtain/blinds system, especially if your unit is subject to west sun, the curtains/blinds will close at pre-determined time of the day, even when you are not home.  This simple step can significantly reduce the workload on your air conditioning unit, leading to energy savings of up to 10%.

 

Invest in Smart Technology

Consider investing in smart technology to help you manage your indoor climate more efficiently. A smart temperature and humidity sensor can help you monitor and adjust the temperature in your home based on your preferences, without over cooling.

 

Don't Forget the Motion Sensor

Another tech-savvy way to optimize your air conditioning usage is by using a motion sensor. This device can detect when there is no one in the room and automatically adjust the temperature or turn off the AC to save energy. It's a convenient way to ensure that you're not cooling an empty space.

Works best with a smart ceiling fan

Air-conditioners work best with DC ceiling fans, especially so if you have a high ceiling, the fans help to cool and circulate the cool air more efficiently.

Air-conditioners, fundamentally, do not create cold or heat; they merely move heat from indoor to outdoor.

 

When the AC is turned off and the windows are opened, the indoor coolness dissipates outside, and the initial hot air returns from outdoors.

When used with the right ceiling fan, the rooms cools faster and it also helps to prolong the cooling effect even after your AC has been switched off.

 

Other little things

  • Let your motorised curtains/blinds, ceiling fans and AC work together on a single platform for centralised control
  • Turn off appliances not in use, they may sound insignificant, but they make an ocean.  Some apartments have too much unnecessary lightings simply for aesthetics, use sparingly.
  • Set your AC to auto off at sleep, best work with a smart sensor, so you do not wake up perspiring, NEA reports you can have up to $390 saving a year

 

Other interesting things 

  • Use your fan only when you're in the room. A ceiling fan doesn't cool a room like an AC does; it only cools your body. Leaving it on in an empty room wastes energy savings.

  • The 'wind chill effect' from the fan is what keeps you cool from the breeze on your skin.

  • If you are going to be away from the room for about an hour or less, refrain from turning the AC off, and then turning it on when you return, it might sound like you are saving 1 hours of electricity, but the effort to re-cool the room might not be as efficient as you may think.  So, you do have to find a way to convince your parents or your spouse on this one though.

  • The first ceiling fan was invented by Philip Diehl in1889.  He added a light fixture to the ceiling fan.
